Why This Japanese Green Tea Should Be Your New Obsession
Plus our simple at home hojicha latte recipe.

Looking for a caffeine-gentle alternative to matcha? Discover why hojicha powder is taking the wellness world by storm.
It seems that most of us have been riding the matcha wave–and for good reason: it’s delicious, packed with antioxidants and with the perfect combination of caffeine and L-theanine that provides a calm focus without the crash of the traditional productivity-boosting beverages like coffee. While there’s no real reason to ever want for more, for those of us wanting to switch up their daily routine, or are looking for something even more gentle, I present to you matcha’s perfect companion: hojicha.
So what exactly is hojicha? This green tea powder comes from the same Camellia sinensis plant as matcha, but undergoes a roasting process that transforms both its flavor and nutritional profile. The result? A warm, nutty, almost coffee-like tea that's winning hearts (and taste buds) worldwide.
1. Lower Caffeine Content for Better Sleep
Here's where hojicha really shines: low caffeine hojicha powder contains about 7.4mg of caffeine per gram, compared to matcha's 35mg. This makes it the perfect afternoon or evening tea when you want that warm, comforting ritual without having to worry that any sleep will be stolen from you.
The roasting process naturally reduces the caffeine content, making hojicha powder benefits particularly appealing for caffeine-sensitive tea lovers or anyone looking to reduce their daily intake without giving up their tea ceremony entirely.
2. Rich in Antioxidants
Don't let the lower caffeine fool you—organic hojicha powder is still packed with beneficial compounds. The roasting process creates unique antioxidants called pyrazines, which give hojicha its distinctive nutty flavor while providing anti-inflammatory properties.
While it may have fewer catechins than matcha due to roasting, hojicha compensates with other beneficial compounds that support overall wellness. Think of it as trading some intensity for better digestibility.
3. Easier on Sensitive Stomachs
If matcha makes your stomach do somersaults, hojicha tea powder might be your savior. The roasting process reduces tannins—those compounds that can cause stomach irritation in sensitive individuals. This makes hojicha a gentler option that you can enjoy on an empty stomach without worry.
Perfect for morning rituals when you haven't eaten yet, or as an afternoon pick-me-up that won't leave you reaching for antacids.
4. Naturally Sweet, Minimal Additives Needed
One of the biggest hojicha powder benefits is its naturally sweet, caramelized flavor. Unlike matcha, which can sometimes be bitter without sweeteners, hojicha's roasted profile means you can enjoy it with minimal (or zero) added sugars.
- This makes Japanese hojicha powder perfect for:
- Hojicha latte recipes with just a splash of milk
- Baking applications where you want tea flavor without overwhelming bitterness
Simple hot tea that tastes great straight up
5. Versatility in Culinary Applications
Speaking of versatility, hojicha powder for baking is having a serious moment. Its warm, nutty flavor pairs beautifully with:
- Chocolate desserts
- Ice cream and frozen treats
- Cookies and pastries
- Savory dishes (yes, really!)
The roasted flavor is more familiar to Western palates than matcha's grassy intensity, making it easier to incorporate into fusion recipes and creative culinary experiments.
6. Stress-Reducing Properties
The L-theanine in premium hojicha powder works differently when combined with lower caffeine levels. Instead of the alert calm that matcha provides, hojicha offers a more relaxed, meditative experience. It's like the difference between focused productivity and gentle mindfulness.
This makes hojicha powder ideal for:
- Evening wind-down routines
- Stress management practices
- Meditation and mindfulness sessions
